JSO: 1 dead, 1 injured after car crashes into tree in San Jose area

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the car was stolen. Police say there is also evidence that the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person is dead and another is injured after a crash Tuesday night in the San Jose area.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, a stolen Toyota Camry driven by a man in his twenties with two 16-year-old passengers was traveling north on Powers Avenue. Police say the man was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed.

At about 10:15 p.m., the driver lost control of the car in the 7200 block of Powers Avenue and hit a tree on the east side of the road, JSO said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He is the ninth person to die this year in a traffic-related incident in Duval County. 

First responders took one of the passengers to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The second passenger was not injured and was detained by JSO.

According to JSO, the car was stolen on Jan. 16 from the Art Museum area.

Investigators say there is evidence that the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
