Jacksonville COVID taskforce hosting event to remember lives lost to the virus

The Jacksonville COVID Taskforce will host a Day of Remembrance, Hope and Unity on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the historic James P. Smalls Park.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Community leaders and medical experts will unite at an event this weekend to honor lives lost to COVID-19.

The Jacksonville COVID Taskforce will host a Day of Remembrance, Hope and Unity on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the historic James P. Smalls Park.

The event is held in honor of those who have died due to the virus, letting their loved ones know they are not forgotten.

Organizers of the event say the names of people who have died will be displayed on banners throughout the historic baseball park.

"We know that many people had to go to the graveyard and they couldn't have funerals. They couldn't recognize their loss and so a lot of that is still pinned up in people. We want to give them an opportunity to grieve together. There will be people there who suffered just as they have," said Pastor Fred Newbill.

The event is also about getting people vaccinated. There will be vaccination buses on-hand.

If you would like to submit the name of a loved one you've lost to COVID-19, please email JaxCOVIDTaskForce@Gmail.com.
