JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Northeast Florida's overall death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 2,000 in Friday's new statistics from the Florida Department of Health.
In all, state statistics show, 2,005 residents of the six-county region have died since the beginning of the pandemic. Duval County added five deaths in Friday's report, while Nassau County reported two.
Statewide, Florida recorded 138 more deaths from the coronavirus pandemic in Friday's daily health department report. The statewide toll increased to 32,093, including 31,522 Florida residents, dating to the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of new cases around Florida increased by 5,975, for a new cumulative total of 1,936,207. Duval County added 154 positive tests, while St. Johns County had 36, Clay and Nassau counties 13 each and Putnam County six. Baker County reported no additional cases of COVID-19 Friday.
The Florida Department of Health's positivity rate for laboratory results received Thursday remained nearly unchanged in Friday's report, moving only from 6.80 percent to 6.84 percent. The percentage had been in double figures for most of January before decreasing over the past six weeks.
The new-case positivity rate declined in much of Northeast Florida. Duval County's rate dropped to 3.12 percent, Clay County to 1.73 percent, Putnam County to 1.23 percent and St. Johns County to 3.65 percent. Nassau County rose to 4.94 but remained below the state average.
Coronavirus-related hospitalizations continued to decline Friday in the official figures of the Agency for Health Care Administration, which reported 3,419 current COVID-19 hospitalizations across Florida as of 1:45 p.m. Friday. In mid-January, that figure had exceeded 7,500, while more than 9,000 patients were hospitalized statewide during the surge during last summer.
Duval County reported 158 current COVID-19 hospitalizations Friday afternoon, with 20 in Clay County, four each in Nassau and Putnam counties and seven in St. Johns County.
