Two men charged with burglary, possessing stolen credit cards in Atlantic Beach

Two men were arrested Friday after police say they swiped envelopes containing credit cards off porches in an Atlantic Beach neighborhood.

Correction: An earlier version of this article reported that the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office conducted the investigation and arrests, but it was the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

Two men were arrested Friday after police say they swiped envelopes containing credit cards off porches in an Atlantic Beach neighborhood.

Obed Montero Cardoza, 21, and Luis Alvaro Acosta, 28, are facing multiple charges including burglary and possession of stolen credit cards.

The case began Wednesday when the Atlantic Beach Police Department was called to the 2300 block of Fiddlers Lane, where a resident said a man stole an envelope off of his porch.

Police say surveillance video from the home shows an envelope placed on the porch. Two minutes later, a man is shown walking up to the porch and placing the envelope into his pocket in his pants before entering a dark SUV and driving off.

An investigation by police revealed the package was delivered from a company that issues and sends replacement credit cards to customers. The victim said he never ordered a replacement credit card, according to the police report.

The following day, the victim received a call from customer service at Barclays Bank about fraudulent charges. The victim said he never banked with Barclays and said the $11,000 charges were all fraudulent.

Atlantic Beach Police were able to determine that three more envelopes containing credit cards from the same sender were scheduled to be delivered to the same neighborhood.

The following Friday, police set up surveillance at a residence scheduled to receive an envelope. Once the envelope was delivered, the report says officers saw a dark SUV pull up to the residence. Cardoza stepped out the vehicle, grabbed the envelope and handed it to the passenger, Acosta, before driving off, the report said.

Both men were apprehended during a traffic stop in which police say two more credit cards were found inside the vehicle.

Cardoza and Acosta were arrested and charged with burglary. Acosta faces an additional charge of possessing and receiving a stolen credit card. Cardoza has also been charged with criminal use of personal identification information.

Both Acosta and Cardoza were both released on bond.

On Nov. 13, Cardoza went to the Atlantic Beach Police Department to pick up the vehicle he had been driving and was arrested again. Police say they reviewed the still photos from Best Buy regarding the fraudulent transactions and were able to identify the suspect as Cardoza, according to the police report.

He was charged with criminal use of personal identification information and fraudulent or illegal use of credit cards to obtain goods $300 or more.
